The Jacob & Marcus Wallenberg Center for Innovative and Sustainable Business Development

About the center

The Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg Center for Innovative and Sustainable Business Development studies how institutions and organizations direct the development of scientific knowledge to address complex, global societal challenges. The center's work sits at the intersection of innovation management, economics of science, entrepreneurship, and strategy.

Society's capacity to solve its most pressing problems depends on how scientific knowledge is produced, funded, and translated into practice. That process is neither automatic nor neutral. The center investigates the conditions that shape it.

Research themes

The center's research is organized around four interconnected themes:

  • Science funding. How public and private funding decisions shape the direction and output of scientific research.
  • Diversity in science. How diversity among researchers affects knowledge production, collaboration, and outcomes.
  • Innovation in the food sector. How organizations and systems innovate to meet the demands of sustainable food production.
  • Technology transfer and commercialization. How scientific knowledge moves from research institutions into industry, startups, and policy.

The center's work draws on a range of empirical approaches, including micro-econometrics, surveys, bibliometric and text analysis, lab and field experiments, network analysis, and population registry data.

About the Chair

Since SSE's founding in 1909, the Wallenberg family has been among the School's most prominent supporters. A gift from Knut Agathon Wallenberg in 1903 was the first of many contributions toward establishing SSE.

To honor that relationship, and in celebration of Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg's 60th birthdays in 2016, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation established a Chair in Business Administration at the School. The chair was named the Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg Chair in Innovative and Sustainable Business Development.
