Broadened recuritment

SSE works to increase diversity, equal opportunities, and inclusion across all programs. Broadened recruitment is a long-term priority aimed at ensuring that students from different backgrounds have access to higher education at SSE.

Legal framework

According to the Swedish Higher Education Act, universities and higher education institutions must actively promote broadened recruitment. This includes working to ensure that students from underrepresented groups are aware of and able to access higher education.

SSE’s approach

At SSE, broadened recruitment means working towards a student population with diversity in gender, geography, and social background.

SSE also aims to ensure that all students feel welcome and included, regardless of social background, age, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity or expression, ethnicity, or religion.

This broad definition reflects SSE’s ambition to address multiple dimensions of diversity. The work requires long-term commitment and continuous development, and SSE acknowledges that there is still progress to be made.

Focus areas

A central focus of SSE’s work is to increase participation among students from underrepresented backgrounds, particularly those from non-academic households. This includes raising awareness of SSE, supporting access to application processes, and creating inclusive study environments.

Initiatives and collaborations

SSE works with a range of initiatives and partners to support broadened recruitment:

  • Student ambassador programs that engage with schools across Sweden and internationally
  • Collaborations with organizations such as F1RST and Stiftelsen Läxhjälpen
  • A network of study counsellors who support prospective students
  • Alternative admission routes for BSc programs (e.g. alternative selection and special merits)
  • Scholarships that support students from underrepresented backgrounds
  • GMAT fee waivers for MSc applicants with financial constraints
  • Membership in Include, a national network for broadened recruitment

SSE also highlights diverse role models, including alumni, to provide different perspectives on study paths and careers.

Organization and responsibility

SSE has a dedicated Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager responsible for coordinating and developing this work, both internally and externally.
