CIVICA Engage Track

The CIVICA Engage Track offers our BSc students a European, interdisciplinary learning experience across multiple campuses, with a strong focus on civic engagement. The track may be taken as an elective during Semesters 4-6 and leads to a certificate upon completion.

Who is the CIVICA Engage Track for?

The CIVICA Engage Track is designed for students with a strong commitment to civic engagement. It offers a unique opportunity to deepen that commitment, address societal challenges, and collaborate with a diverse community of ambitious students from across Europe.

Combining academic study with practical engagement, the track enables selected students to explore complex questions related to responsibility and sustainability. Students take dedicated CIVICA Engage courses, gain international experience, collaborate with community-based organisations, and share their insights and reflections with fellow students and wider audiences.

Access to leading European institutions

The CIVICA Engage Track was developed within the framework of the CIVICA alliance. It provides access to some of Europe’s leading higher education institutions and is offered by:

CIVICA Engage Track Certificate

To receive the CIVICA Engage Track Certificate, students must:

1. Complete two of the following three components:

One Engage course at their home institution
One Engage course at a CIVICA partner institution other than their home institution
Participation in one European Week

2. Complete a Showcase Assignment, which is graded on a pass/fail basis

The Showcase Assignment is designed to highlight students’ civic engagement while demonstrating how the social sciences contribute to building fairer and more sustainable societies.

Application requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in the second year of the BSc program in Business and Economics or the BSc program in Retail Management at SSE. Special conditions apply to the BSc program in Retail Management.
Before starting the CIVICA Engage Track, applicants must have earned at least 60 ECTS credits.
Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.5.

CIVICA Engage Track components

The CIVICA Engage Track consists of three key components:

European Week

The European Week is a one-week program held once per academic year at one of the participating universities. This multifaceted program combines academic content with active engagement in local organisations and issues, as well as interaction and collaboration with other CIVICA Engage Track students.

Participants receive a certificate of attendance upon completing the European Week.

- Course credits determined by the student’s home institution
Engage courses are offered as electives at each partner institution:

The courses offer a distinct experience at each institution. Participants completing a semester-long exchange as part of the track must take at least one Engage course during their exchange.
Showcase Assignment

The Showcase Assignment is the final milestone for students participating in the CIVICA Engage Track. Designed to highlight both personal growth and public engagement, it consists of two components:

Spread the Word (Public Component)

Students create a media piece that communicates what they have learned and the insights they have gained to a broader audience. The piece may take various forms, such as a video, podcast, article, or social media campaign, and should address a topic relevant to European societies. Its purpose is to share the student’s unique perspective, shaped by their CIVICA Engage Track experience and university education.

Reflective Component (Personal and Analytical)

Students reflect critically on their learning experiences in the CIVICA Engage Track. They are encouraged to examine key moments of growth, identify their strengths and areas for development, and consider how the Track has shaped their understanding of civic engagement and societal challenges in Europe.

Together, these components showcase the transformative impact of the CIVICA Engage Track and the student’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to public discourse and civic life.
