Study Economics at SSE

The PhD program in Economics (240 ECTS) is a North American-style program with an annual intake of five doctoral students.

During the first year, you complete mandatory core courses as part of the Stockholm Doctoral Course Program in Economics, Econometrics and Finance (SDPE), jointly organized by SSE and Stockholm University. This collaboration provides a structured course offering and has developed into one of the leading doctoral course programs in Europe. After completing the core courses, you select electives and begin work on your thesis.

Research from SSE PhD dissertations is frequently published in leading academic journals, including the Economic Journal and the Journal of International Economics. SSE is also a member of the European Network for Training in Economic Research (ENTER), a collaboration with leading economics departments across Europe.

Graduates pursue a wide range of career paths, including tenure-track positions (for example, at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and Singapore Management University), roles in policy institutions (such as the European Central Bank and the Swedish Ministry of Finance), and positions in the private sector (for example, at Goldman Sachs).

Program structure

Structured as a five-year, full-time, residential program taught in English, it consists of mandatory core courses (60 ECTS) offered through the Stockholm Doctoral Course Program in Economics, Econometrics and Finance (SDPE), elective courses (45 ECTS), and a thesis component (135 ECTS).

Many PhD students spend one or two semesters visiting highly ranked universities in the United States and Europe.

Alumni perspective

SSE has an excellent economics department with a very broad faculty. No matter what topics you'd like to work on, there's bound to be a supervisor with experience in your field. That's very rare for such a small department.
