Automation in Grocery E-Commerce at ICA Brunna

ICA Retail Club visited ICA's automated Customer Fulfilment Centre (CFC) in Brunna to learn more about grocery e-commerce and logistics.

The visit was interactive and students had the opportunity to see the robots live in action and even step into the -26 degree freezer to experience firsthand how the facility operates on a daily basis.

Fredrik Söderlund (Head of Logistic) shared insights into the operations of the highly automated warehouse. The facility, which opened in November 2021, is developed in partnership with Ocado, a British company known for its advanced grocery e-commerce technology.

Students learned how ICA uses Ocado's automation platform to improve efficiency and manage grocery deliveries. The Brunna site operates with 585 robotic units, 22 robotic arms, and employees working together to handle orders.

At a time when AI is such a discussed topic, it was especially interesting to see how AI-driven precision and humans work together in practice. While the robots move at incredible speed to manage parts of the picking process, many important tasks are still handled manually by employees. The visit demonstrated how technology and human work can complement each other in modern e-commerce operations.

Thank you ICA and Fredrik for hosting such an interesting visit.
