First year Summary, Security, resilience and the foundations of competitiveness

Our First Year Summary 2025–2026 explores a strategic challenge for Sweden and the Nordic region: how to build stronger defense and preparedness while supporting long-term competitiveness.

Security and competitiveness are increasingly intertwined. Businesses depend on reliable infrastructure, functioning supply chains and institutions that can respond to disruption. Rebuilding civil and military defense, in turn, depends on innovative companies, industrial capacity and the ability to turn investment into capability.

At the Center for Security and Resilience at the Stockholm School of Economics, we examine these connections. How can public investment strengthen preparedness while creating conditions for innovation and growth? How can organizations meet urgent security needs while preserving efficiency and accountability?

Since our founding in June 2025, we have brought together more than 50 researchers and established 19 research projects. Working with partners across government, industry and academia, we connect research with the decisions shaping Sweden’s security and economic future.

Our first-year report documents the foundations of this work. It reflects our conviction that resilience is a strategic capacity: the ability to maintain essential operations, adapt to changing conditions and invest with confidence.

As we enter our second year, our ambition is to help build a society whose security and competitiveness reinforce each other.
