Jonathan Horgby, Germany

Student, BSc in Retail Management

"In the Retail Management program, you really see how the things your learn are implemented in a real business setting. I like how closely we work together with retail companies and all the opportunities we get to connect with industry people. The fact that we're a tight-knit group of only 60 students is also a big bonus for me."

Pransee Patel, India

2024 graduate, BSc in Retail Management

“The RM program has a people-oriented approach to business and economics. Close collaborations with companies through the Applied Retail Track also provide a unique lens into the operations and strategies of some of the largest retailers. Overall, combing this program with my favorite feature of SSE, its entrepreneurial drive, has resulted in an exciting, challenging yet rewarding journey."

Melody Blesserman, Sweden

Student, BSc in Retail Management

"I have developed a lot professionally through the great mix of courses, but I have also developed a lot as a person through the Antonia Ax:son Johnson Tutorial Program."

Program description

Who is the student choosing Retail Management?

Fredrik Lange
Program Director

"You are more interested in the business side of the business and economics field, because the Retail Management program has more courses in marketing, management and accounting than in economics and finance. You are also interested in sustainability, digitalization and the changes.

You are interested in being part of a small and personal program with 60 students. You also like to engage with researchers on a one-on-one basis cause that’s what we provide in the tutorial program. You get to meet your teachers individually to discuss your development and the topics that we cover in the classroom.

You are also interested in engaging with business people because we provide a lot of opportunities for that throughout the program."

Program structure

Before the start of the program
In the weeks before the actual start of the program, we offer a unique 24-hour crash course in happiness and wellbeing at SSE's conference centre outside of Stockholm. The course is led by Micael Dahlen, Professor of Wellness, Welfare and Happiness at SSE. By integrating wellbeing into your academic and professional development, we hope that you as a student will help create a more sustainable and healthier world, both for yourself, your future colleagues and society. Because this is what economics is fundamentally about – welfare, wellbeing, and happiness.

Before you enroll, we also offer a preparatory Mathematics course as well as "Welcome to Swedish", a popular introductory course for international students who wish to familiarize themselves with the Swedish language and culture (even though all programs at SSE are taught in English).

Carefully customized courses

The program largely consists of mandatory courses with a strong retail focus. They have been carefully customized to provide you with both retail-specific content and content students normally receive at business schools (such as economics, marketing, accounting, management and strategy). The program is closely linked to the world-class industry research at Center for Retailing.

Applied Retail Track
The Applied Retail Track that runs through all 6 semesters gives you a unique opportunity to work closely with well-known retail companies. It gives you unmatched networking opportunities for your future career. Theory and practice are combined and you work hands-on with real-life projects and challenges such as sustainability.

There are 10 retail clubs and each retail club consists of 15–20 students, company representatives, and a faculty member from SSE. The Applied Retail Track includes workshops, company visits, theme lectures as well as career planning. Get updates from all these activities on this page.

The Antonia Ax:son Johnson Tutorial Program
The tutorial program runs through all 6 semesters and focuses on offering a more personalized learning experience for students. It is inspired by similar ideas at Oxford and Cambridge. Through tutor sessions with faculty members and skills workshops, you develop your academic knowledge as well as your self-leadership and peer leadership skills.

Bachelor thesis & company project
In semesters 5 or 6, you write your Bachelor's thesis and also have a big company project. Furthermore, there is a limited number of spots available if you want to go for an exchange semester at one of our partner universities.
