The Forum for Research on Eastern Europe: Climate and Environment (FREECE) and the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) invite researchers to submit papers for a workshop on climate change beliefs and climate policy preferences at the Stockholm School of Economics on Nov. 27, 2026. The submission deadline is Oct. 19.

About the workshop

Climate change beliefs and policy preferences are closely connected, but concern about climate change does not necessarily translate into support for measures to address it. Public support also depends on how people perceive policy costs, effectiveness, and fairness, as well as their trust in the institutions responsible for implementation.

At the same time, policies and their consequences can reshape these beliefs and preferences. Understanding these relationships is essential for designing effective climate policies that can gain and sustain public support.

The workshop welcomes theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented papers from economics, political science, and related fields.

Topics of interest

Topics of interest include:

  • How climate change beliefs and risk perceptions form and evolve, and how they shape preferences for climate policies.

  • The role of information, media, social norms, political identity, and trust in shaping climate beliefs and policy support.

  • How perceived costs, benefits, and fairness, including the distributional consequences of climate policies, influence public preferences.

  • How experiences of extreme weather, economic shocks, and policy interventions affect climate beliefs and attitudes.

  • How policy design, communication, and compensation influence public acceptance, and how implementing climate policies affects subsequent support.

Studies from different geographical settings are welcome, with submissions focusing on Eastern Europe especially encouraged.
