Artificial intelligence is increasingly used by employers to screen, score, and rank job applicants. While these tools can make recruitment more efficient, they may also reproduce or amplify existing biases, raising an important question: Can independent audits help ensure that AI-driven hiring creates fairer employment opportunities?
In this seminar, Hao Ma, Assistant Professor at the Department of Accounting, presents new research examining New York City’s pioneering Algorithmic Bias Audit Law, which requires employers using certain automated hiring tools to undergo independent bias audits. The study examines whether these audits actually change who firms hire, how firms adapt their recruitment processes, and whether these changes come with broader costs and benefits.
We will discuss:
- Whether independent bias audits can reduce gender disparities in hiring
- How firms change their hiring processes and human oversight in response to AI regulation
- The trade-off between fairer hiring, recruitment efficiency, and employee performance
About the presenter
Hao Ma is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Accounting at the Stockholm School of Economics. Her research interests include auditing and regulation, labor markets, and the effects of AI on corporate decision-making.
