Welcome to Middagsbordet, an event series by Kulturhuset Stadsteatern and the Stockholm School of Economics that invites the public to explore research and contemporary societal issues through food, cultural experiences, and roundtable discussions. On October 29, we turn our attention to migration, integration, and belonging.

The way we talk about migration, integration, and belonging has changed significantly over the post-war period.
The 1970s marked an important shift in Swedish policy. In 1975, the Swedish Parliament adopted new guidelines for immigrant and minority policy that represented a clear departure from assimilation as a political ideal. Instead, immigrants were to be given opportunities to maintain and develop their language and cultural identity, with support from society.
Today, the political landscape looks different, with stricter requirements for residence permits and citizenship, alongside an increasingly intense debate about assimilation. What lies behind this shift? And what does research tell us about these developments?
At this edition of Middagsbordet, we explore how Sweden draws and redraws the boundaries of migration, citizenship, and belonging through politics, legislation, institutions, and public discourse. How have migration and migration policy shaped Sweden? How are the conditions for belonging to a society created and changed? And what happens when changes in policy and legislation reach people's everyday lives?
Join us for an evening about migration, citizenship, and belonging, in research and public debate, but also in everyday life: in encounters between neighbors, in the classroom, at work, and here, around the dinner table.
The evening is organized in collaboration with the SSE Center for Migration and Integration Research (CMIR), SSE Center for Philosophies of Markets, and SSE Art Initiative.

Middagsbordet is organized by Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in collaboration with the Stockholm School of Economics. It is a space for exchanging ideas, where participants meet researchers, writers, artists, and opinion leaders around shared dinner tables.
Together, guests discuss questions spanning education, economics, culture, class, and fashion, while experiencing music, poetry, and theater in a program created specifically around the theme of each evening.
