When do autonomous retailing work, and when does it not?
Welcome to an Open Breakfast Seminar on the topic of unmanned stores with internationally renowned retail researcher Carl-Philip Ahlbom, Florida State University.
When do autonomous retailing work, and when does it not?
A few years ago, unmanned stores were going to replace the checkout, the cashier and maybe the supermarket itself. Since then, Amazon has closed its Amazon Go stores and several well-funded start-ups have folded. Yet simple self-scanning stores keep spreading: in villages, on campuses and in the hours nobody wants to staff. Carl-Philip Ahlbom will talk about why the cleverest technology doesn’t win, why trust matters more than the checkout, and where these stores make sense. He will end with his predictions for the future of autonomous retailing.

Carl-Philip Ahlbom is Assistant Professor of Marketing at Florida State University and holds a PhD from the Stockholm School of Economics. He has studied autonomous stores since 2020, from experiments with shoppers to data from real stores.
