SITE awarded Swedish Institute funding for EU accession and trade negotiation program in Moldova
The Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) has been awarded funding from the Swedish Institute (SI) to develop and deliver a new training program, Democratic European Accession Negotiations (DEAN), aimed at strengthening Moldova’s capacity to negotiate its accession to the European Union and future trade arrangements.
The initiative is funded through the SI Baltic Sea and Eastern Partnership Program. Together, the programs seek to advance democratic governance, deepen regional cooperation and support the Eastern Partnership countries’ continued integration with the EU.
Strengthening Moldova’s negotiation capacity
SITE’s program will bring together civil servants, diplomats and business representatives from Moldova. Through training, peer learning and international exchange, participants will develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to prepare for and conduct complex negotiations connected to EU accession and trade.
“Moldova’s path towards EU membership presents significant opportunities as well as complex negotiation challenges. With the Swedish Institute’s support, we look forward to bringing together professionals from across government, diplomacy and business and equipping them with practical knowledge, stronger networks and greater capacity to advance the country’s European integration,” says Andrew Schenkel, Assistant Professor in the Department of Management and Organization at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE).
The program will also create opportunities for participants to exchange experience and build professional networks across sectors and national borders. These relationships will support cooperation throughout Moldova’s accession process and contribute to the country’s long-term institutional capacity.
“Research-based negotiation principles will be used both to stimulate democratic habits and to embody the inclusive decision-making that is itself a component of a healthy local democracy,” says Per Hedberg, Research Fellow in the Department of Marketing and Strategy and Affiliated Researcher at the House of Governance and Public Policy.
Through the initiative, SITE will draw on its expertise in transition economics, international trade and institutional development to support Moldovan professionals as they navigate an important stage in the country’s European integration.
