Misum Forum 2020 – COVID Crisis: Increasing inequalities and decreasing investments?

On October 7, Misum hosted the 2020 edition of its annual forum, this year focused on the impact of COVID-19 on global inequalities in education and healthcare, and the state of strategic, long-term investments into sustainability. Researchers and guest speakers from academia and business presented new research findings and discuss sustainable business strategies in light of the pandemic.

Five chairs lined up on a studio set, with a dark background with bookshelves.

About

The Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets at the Stockholm School of Economics (Misum) was delighted to invite internal and external stakeholders to Misum Forum 2020, a half-day interdisciplinary virtual event on sectoral responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The forum reflected on what the pandemic had, at that point, implied for industry, human capital, business entrepreneurship, and how to navigate emerging long-term sustainability challenges.

Speakers presented new research findings on how the pandemic had impacted human capital, including health and education in vulnerable regions, and explored firms’ ability to continue or initiate long-term projects aimed at supporting the transition to more sustainable business practices.

The event narrative centered on two mechanisms that risked undermining sustainability progress during a period of disruption: 1) increasing inequalities and 2) decreasing strategic investments by firms. Speakers investigated the extent to which evidence of these outcomes could be observed and discussed the responses needed to mitigate them.
