Qualitative research with LLMs: Recasting abduction as a socio-technical practice

Abstract: This talk is based on a manuscript co-authored with Stine Grodal and Henri’s work building Skimle.com qualitative analysis tool. Using qualitative research as an example of knowledge work, we elaborate how AI does not merely replace human tasks but reconfigures how humans collaborate. We develop a representation-centric perspective of human-AI interaction and elaborate how this view recasts theory-building as a creative practice enacted between humans and machines. We believe our conceptual work has broader implications for understanding how LLMs shape knowledge work.

About Henri Schildt

Henri Schildt is a Professor of Strategy at Aalto University. Having spent last 20 years in research, his published articles have spanned topics from technology strategy and algorithms to sensemaking and institutional work. In recent years he has studies use of data and AI in organizations as well as the efforts of NGOs and social enterprises in helping refugees and migrants. Since late 2025, he has been on a leave of absence from his university and focused full time on developing his AI startup, Skimle, which leverages LLMs for transparent, predictable, and responsible analysis of interviews and other documents. During weekends and evenings, Henri fixes bugs and writes research articles.
