Webinar: Who gets to belong? Music, identity, and storytelling in contemporary Europe
What does it mean to belong in contemporary Europe? And who gets to decide?
In this webinar, Swedish artist and rapper Erik Lundin joins sociologist Sarah Philipson Isaac, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for Migration and Integration Research (CMIR), for a conversation on identity, place, and cultural expression through the lens of music and storytelling.
Erik Lundin's music has long explored questions of identity, belonging, and representation. Drawing on his artistic work and experiences, this conversation examines how culture and place shape our sense of self, what it means to tell your own story when dominant narratives leave limited room for diverse voices, and how music can function as both a refuge and a form of resistance.
Together, Erik Lundin and Sarah Philipson Isaac will reflect on how suburban cultural landscapes shape, and are shaped by, the people who inhabit them. The conversation will move between the personal and the structural, exploring how representation operates in society, how people navigate multiple identities, and what belonging means in increasingly diverse European societies.
While rooted in the Swedish context, the themes resonate far beyond it. Through music, storytelling, and sociological reflection, the webinar invites participants to consider whose stories are heard, whose voices are recognized, and who gets to belong in Europe.
This event is part of CIVICA's Meet the European Culture webinar series, which brings together students, researchers, artists, and practitioners from across Europe to explore culture, identity, and shared societal challenges.
