Executive Trainee Module (XTM)
The Executive Trainee Module (XTM) is SSE’s response to the growing demand for practical learning integrated with academic training. The module emphasizes the strategic perspectives and real-world experience that are increasingly important in today’s business organizations. The XTM is available to students enrolled in SSE’s MSc programs.

Through the Executive Trainee Module (XTM), students gain first-hand experience of working closely with senior executives in partner organizations. The module provides valuable insights into organizational leadership and offers opportunities to build a professional network early in a student's career.
XTM was developed in response to the growing demand for practical learning experiences alongside academic studies. The module helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice by giving students exposure to real organizational challenges and decision-making processes.
Learning outcomes
By participating in XTM, students develop an understanding of organizations and their business environments from a leadership perspective, including:
- Company history, culture, and values
- Current and future competitive landscapes
- Business models and strategy
- Organizational capabilities and ways of working
- Financial performance and position
- Strategic opportunities and challenges
- Students also gain practical experience in professional and leadership settings by:
- Working as part of a team or department
- Demonstrating professionalism and collaboration skills
- Developing self-awareness and leadership capabilities
- Managing complex tasks and stakeholder relationships
- Practicing communication and negotiation skills
Program structure
The XTM consists of approximately 80 days of full-time trainee work and 20 days of case writing and XTM classes at SSE.
The module is offered during the third semester of most MSc programs. Please note that students enrolled in the MSc programs in International Business and Public Policy are not eligible to participate in XTM.
Participation is competitive, and students must be selected by one of the participating XTM partner organizations.
