New art class room by artist Marie-Louise Ekman at SSE

A new art classroom created by the Swedish artist Marie-Louise Ekman has been inaugurated at the school. The classroom contains parts of the artist's own studio, as well as several new original works.

Throughout November 2023, Marie-Louise Ekman has transformed one of the Stockholm School of Economics' classrooms into an art installation and a completely unique learning environment. The work Testamentet (2023) contains parts of Marie-Louise Ekman's studio. Saved items, tools, memories, and original works are arranged as they were until very recently in Marie-Louise Ekman's studio in Södermalm. In addition to Testamentet, Marie-Louise has painted several original works directly on the walls of the classroom, such as the piece Dam och klocka (2023).

"Marie-Louise Ekman's room installation resembles nothing else. It is a studio, her highly personal creative encyclopedia, and school doodles all at once. The room is a museum-quality artwork, and it is a privilege that she has made it possible for our students to experience something so unique," says Lars Strannegård, President of the Stockholm School of Economics.

Marie-Louise Ekman is an artist, playwright, director, author, and the former President of the Royal Academy of Arts and head of the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten).

The room was made possible thanks to a donation by the Lars Backsell family.

The room is the school's fifth art classroom. More information about all the art classrooms and the permanent collection can be found on Art Initiative's homepage.
