Review excerpt
English translation:
“Dahlgren Strååt’s motifs differ considerably. For me, the painting itself becomes part of the works’ subject. Surfaces that initially appear dry and matte reveal a sheen on closer inspection. The fine texture of the linen canvas sometimes forms both ground and frame. I have to move closer to understand how brushwork interacts with airbrush in some of the paintings.
Different kinds of paint layers are tested, and the image’s shifting stages coexist with the painting’s finished state. Layer upon layer of varnish creates depth in the shimmering surface of a dark painting. In other works, lines and forms have been scraped out of the paint.
An image of a primeval forest turns out to be a painting of a theatre backdrop, clearly presented as such, so the intention is not to deceive. A section of a seascape floats freely on the canvas, while another deep-sea habitat has been formed with fingertips. One painting differs from the rest through both its homogeneous surface and the lace pattern covering the underlying motif. At first, I think it is a photograph hanging there. The composition manifests painterly investigations that simultaneously reveal and conceal.”
