Maria Friberg: Alongside Us #2

“The men in my images are signs for men, trying to find their place in times of turmoil.”

— Maria Friberg

Maria Friberg is a Swedish artist whose work explores themes of power, masculinity, identity, and humanity’s relationship to nature and consumption. Through photography and video, she often depicts well-dressed men in unexpected situations characterized by vulnerability, introspection, and stillness.

Friberg frequently places her subjects in contexts that challenge conventional expectations of masculinity and authority. Rather than emphasizing action or control, her works often portray moments of reflection and uncertainty, encouraging viewers to reconsider established ideas about gender, identity, and social hierarchies.

Alongside Us #2 (2007), displayed in Room Estrid, can be understood as a reflection on humanity’s relationship to the natural world. The work invites viewers to consider connections between human identity, vulnerability, and the environments we inhabit.

SSE holds several works by Maria Friberg in its Permanent Collection, including Somewhere Else, Changed Position, Almost There #5, and Alongside Us #2.
