Lars Arrhenius: Handels for Future!

Lars Arrhenius’ video artwork Handels for Future! (2019) is a playful yet thoughtful portrait of the Stockholm School of Economics. At once an interpretation and an idealized vision of the School, it reflects SSE’s relationship to its surroundings and to the sustainability challenges that engaged Arrhenius throughout his career.

It was with great sadness that, in spring 2020, SSE learned of Lars Arrhenius’ passing. The generosity, warmth, and commitment he brought to the creation of this artwork remain an important part of its legacy.

Handels for Future! is permanently displayed at House of Innovation on Norrtullsgatan 2, in the cafeteria, and on the small screen in the north corridor on the ground floor of Sveavägen 65.

Lars Arrhenius (1966–2020) was a close friend of SSE and the Art Initiative. His work reflects the belief that art can contribute to a more welcoming, creative, and reflective academic environment.

In Arrhenius’ playful vision, the School appears as a transparent and inviting dollhouse where tradition meets optimism for the future. The work highlights scientific inquiry while emphasizing empathy, creativity, and human connection. It also points toward the global challenges that future generations of decision-makers will need to address.

“Lars Arrhenius was an artist who moved effortlessly across boundaries. He was audacious, unconstrained by genre, and driven by genuine curiosity, humor, and a strong sense of community.

It is deeply sad that Lars is no longer with us. The memory of him remains, and his loving interpretation of the Stockholm School of Economics will be cared for with great tenderness.”

— Lars Strannegård, President of the Stockholm School of Economics
