Olafur Eliasson: Green Light
Green Light (2016) was designed by Olafur Eliasson for Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary in Vienna and developed in collaboration with refugees participating in an artistic workshop program.
The project included the construction of Green Light lamps alongside language courses, seminars, artist interventions, and film screenings. Through this collaborative framework, the work addressed questions of migration, inclusion, participation, and belonging.
The green light functions as a symbol of welcome, openness, and possibility. It may also evoke associations with lighthouses and lanterns, guiding movement and offering orientation in uncertain circumstances.
At the same time, the illuminated structure is surrounded by layers of construction and framing. The light remains visible and inviting, yet access to it appears more complex than it first seems. In this way, the work reflects both the aspirations and the challenges associated with inclusion and integration.
