Håkan Rehnberg: Utan titel (gul) (Untitled (Yellow))

Utan titel (gul) (Untitled (Yellow)) (1992) by Håkan Rehnberg is displayed in the President’s Office at SSE.

In his work, Håkan Rehnberg explores and develops a distinctive painting technique using oil paint on sandblasted acrylic glass. The method has affinities with American Color Field painting, a movement in abstract art that emerged in New York during the 1940s and 1950s and was influenced by European modernism. Artists associated with the movement include Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko.

Rehnberg’s work can also be related to the abstract painting of Gerhard Richter, one of the most influential contemporary German artists.

Born in 1953 in Gothenburg, Håkan Rehnberg lives and works in Stockholm. His artistic practice often balances between revealing and concealing. Color is used both to highlight and obscure, drawing attention to what may not be immediately visible.

Rehnberg frequently works with acrylic glass, a material that removes the physical weight and texture associated with canvas and emphasizes the fluid and open-ended qualities of painting.

He has exhibited extensively in Sweden and internationally and has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts since 2000.
