Nils-Eric Johansson began his career at IFK Viksjö. In 1997, he was recruited by Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga in 2000. He then joined 1. FC Nürnberg in 2000 and won the Bundesliga 2 in 2001. During this period, he was also appointed captain of the Swedish U21 national team. Johansson later moved to England to play for Blackburn Rovers, where he made 86 Premier League appearances, and later for Leicester City. In 2007, he returned to Sweden and AIK, winning the Swedish Championship in 2009 and serving as team captain from 2013 until his retirement in 2018.
