Shaping Sweden's Economy: Minister Niklas Wykman on the 2026 Budget
25 September, 2025
On September 22, the Stockholm School of Economics had the pleasure of welcoming Sweden's Minister for Financial Markets, Niklas Wykman, for a lunch lecture hosted by the House of Governance and Public Policy (GaPP).
Niklas Wykman gave SSE students a clear overview of Sweden's current economic conditions, comparing today's recession to previous downturns to explain why the government is pursuing an expansionary budget for 2026. With next year's election approaching, he highlighted how the budget will play a crucial role in shaping Sweden's economic trajectory.
The presentation sparked an engaged dialogue with students, with the temporary reduction of VAT on food emerging as the most debated issue. The seminar was moderated by SSE Professor Robert Östling.
The event offered students and participants a unique opportunity to gain firsthand insights into the government’s economic priorities and their potential impact on both households and businesses.
