Meet SSE's two new CIVICA Ambassadors, Estrid and Simon

As CIVICA Ambassadors, Estrid Kaarme and Simon Warne aim to create engagement among students for current European civic issues: "AI and its impact on democracies is a particularly important matter right now."

CIVICA is an alliance of ten leading European higher education institutions, and each year, the alliance selects ambassadors from each university. The role of the ambassadors is to represent their community and strengthen connections across CIVICA. Ambassadors promote collaboration and serve as key contacts for their peers.

Simon, what motivated you to apply for the CIVICA Ambassador role?

"I learned about the Engage Track at a lunch lecture just shortly after becoming an SSE student which sparked my interest in CIVICA and led me to apply for ambassador," says Simon Warne.

(The Enage Track is a European multi-campus, interdisciplinary experience with a focus on civic engagement and is open for applications until December 15, 2025 – see more further below.)

And Estrid, what sparked your interest in cross-European collaboration?

"I think CIVICA is a great opportunity for international collaboration, and since that is one of my biggest interests, learning from others, across borders and cultures, I really wanted to be an ambassador and encourage people to do just that," says Estrid Kaarme.

Is there a specific theme or project you’re excited to explore with other ambassadors?

Simon: "I'm enthusiastic about entrepreneurship, particularly how it can be used in ways that benefit society at large, so that would be an interesting theme to explore."

Estrid: "I think AI and its impact on democracies is a particularly important matter right now. It's extremely relevant, and I would really like to explore it more."

Interested in CIVICA? Apply to the Engage Track before December 15 for a chance to get involved! Visit the student portal for more information.
