Seminar in Economics | with Lucia Corno
Welcome to this seminar in economics organized by the Department of Economics, SSE. The seminar speaker is Lucia Corno,Cattolica University Milan who will present “Shifting Harmful Norms: Information and Alternative Practices to reduce "Breast-Ironing"
Abstract
This study examines whether harmful gender norms can be mitigating by informing communities about their consequences and by promoting safe alternatives. I designed a randomized controlled trial targeting the tradition of breast ironing (BI) —a practice in which girls’ breasts are flattened to deter male attention, thus limiting early sexual activity and teenage pregnancy. BI has serious long-term health consequences, particularly for breastfeeding later on. I randomly assigned 150 villages in Cameroon to one of three groups: (i) a control group; (ii) an \textit{Information arm}, which facilitated community discussions on the health risks of BI; and (iii) an \textit{Alternative Practices} arm, which promoted non-harmful strategies —such "training" bras for girls and parental sexual education— to achieve the same goals. I measure BI status through reports from both mothers and daughters. Two years after the intervention, both treatments significantly reduce the prevalence of BI and supportive attitudes toward it. The Alternative Practices arm also leads to a decline in early marriage and teen pregnancy, likely due to improved parent-child communication on sexual and reproductive health. These results highlight the potential of shifting entrenched gender norms with cheap and culturally sensitive community-based strategies"
