August Strindberg and Visual Culture: The Emergence of Optical Modernity in Image, Text and Theatre (edited by Jonathan Schroeder, Anna Westerstahl Stenport and Eszter Szalczer, recently published by Bloomsbury) addresses the multiplicity of Strindberg's artistic and literary output. The book charts the vital intersections between theatre, aesthetic theory, and visual elements in his work that have been left largely unexplored, and offers insights into Strindberg as a multimedia artist, whose writing is inseparable from his visual imagination and from the visual technologies of his time. His modern work can be understood as an important influence on contemporary photography, cinema, and painting. For those attempting to understand the broad impacts of art, the case of August Strindberg provides an exemplary starting point. Based on the cases in the book the above-listed contributors of the book have generously agreed to join our discussion of artistic enterprises generated by the great Swedish author and his work.
