AI at SSE
How we work with AI
Artificial intelligence is reshaping how knowledge is produced, communicated and applied across society. At SSE, we engage with this development critically and transparently. Rather than attempting to exclude AI from the academic environment, we integrate it in ways that strengthen learning, research and professional practice.
We provide institution-wide access to approved AI services within secure and governed environments. This creates equal conditions for students and staff, reduces reliance on private subscriptions and safeguards sensitive information. Our approach combines access with clear policies, strong data protection standards and continuous evaluation.
AI in education
In education, every course clearly defines how AI tools may be used. Students are informed whether AI is permitted, to what extent, and how it applies in examinations and graded work. This ensures transparency while supporting the development of responsible and critical AI literacy.
Teaching and assessment are continuously reviewed in light of technological development. Assignments emphasize analysis, application, reasoning and reflection – competencies that cannot be outsourced to a tool. In some courses, AI is integrated directly into the learning process, with students encouraged to critically evaluate outputs and reflect on both possibilities and limitations.
AI in research and administration
In research and administration, AI supports tasks such as drafting, data analysis, transcription and information management. At the same time, strict data protection standards apply. Sensitive research data is handled using approved solutions in accordance with GDPR and institutional policy.
At SSE, AI is a support for learning, reflection and productivity – not a substitute for independent thinking, scholarly rigor or professional judgment. Responsibility for analysis, conclusions and academic integrity always rests with the individual.
By combining secure access, clear governance and continuous development, SSE prepares students and staff for a professional landscape where AI competence is increasingly expected, while safeguarding the core values of higher education.
