Workshop | The economics of air pollution

The FREE Network together with the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) invites academics to join a full day workshop session on the economics of air pollution at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE). The workshop will provide presentations of the latest research on the economics of air pollution and will provide an in-depth look at how to conduct research on the topic.

Workshop

The workshop will consists of two elements: (1) a session with paper presentations, and (2) tutorials from invited experts in the field. The tutorials will provide an in-depth look at how to conduct research on the topic of air pollution, covering issues related to data collection and data sources, methodology, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results. The workshop will provide presentations of the latest research but also give detailed guidance to economists interested in doing their own research on the topic.

Main speakers

Sefi Roth

Sefi is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and an Associate of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment. He is one of the leading experts on the economics of air pollution with publications in the American Economic Journal and JAERE on the links between pollution levels and cognitive performance and crime.

Claudia Persico

Claudia is an Assistant Professor of public policy at the American University. Her research focuses on environmental policy, inequality, health and education policy, with publications in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Labor Economics, and the Journal of Human Resources. Her current work examines the social and biological mechanisms underlying the relationships between poverty, the environment, and children’s cognitive development and health. In particular, much of her current research focuses on how early exposure to environmental pollution can cause inequality by affecting child and adult health, development, behavior, and academic achievement. Her research has been covered by the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR, the Atlantic, and many other major media outlets.

Marion Leroutier

Marion is a post-doctoral researcher at the Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets (Misum) at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE). She is an applied environmental economist focusing on the two major environmental issues of ambient air pollution and climate change. Her work on air pollution and carbon pricing has been published in JEEM and Energy Economics and she was awarded the 2022 Best Doctoral Dissertation Award by the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists.
