Statement from the Director

China’s growing role in the world economy is one of the most important changes in our time. Having transformed from an isolated and poor command economy into a dynamic economic growth engine over the last decades, the country has become increasingly important for business leaders and policymakers in Sweden and the rest of Europe.

To better understand how China is changing and how this influences the rest of the world, the Stockholm School of Economics set up a research center with a focus on the Chinese economy in 2006. With strong continued support from the private sector and the school, the center transformed into a permanent research foundation under the name Stockholm China Economic Research Institute (SCERI) in 2013.

Coming from a long tradition of Asia-focused research, the institute conducts leading research on the Chinese economy as well as its neighbors in Southeast Asia. Partnering with some of the leading academic institutions in Asia including Peking University, we continue to expand our research activities and output, while also taking part in the policy debate as well as teaching at the Stockholm School of Economics.

It is with great pleasure that I continue my work as Director of the Institute and my colleagues and I look forward to actively conducting research on the Chinese economy and sharing our findings and knowledge with those who have an interest in China and Southeast Asia!
