MIRAI Sweden-Japan University Collaboration Webinar
How can hydrological science and social science be combined to better understand, prevent, and manage climate-related disasters?
Join us for a 90-minute webinar brining together researchers from Japan and Sweden to explore interdisciplinary approaches to water, climate, and human security.
MIRAI Webinar Flyer May 21, 2026
Speakers:
Shinichiro Nakamura
Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nagoya University
This presentation introduces socio-hydrology as an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the dynamic interactions between water and society. It will discuss how integrating hydrological and social perspectives can improve our understanding of flood disaster risk and support more effective disaster management. Drawing on recent research and case studies, the talk will highlight the importance of linking natural and social sciences in addressing water-related challenges.
Stefan Döring
Assistant Professor / Associate Senior Lecturer, Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University
This talk presents new approaches to integrating extreme weather data in to social science research. It will draw on ongoing projects examining how droughts and other climate shocks affect refugees and displaces populations, showing how high-resolution climate data can deepen our understanding of vulnerability, migration, and conflict in a warming world.
Programme
- Presentation I: Shinichiro Nakamura, Socio-hydrology & Flood risk
- Presentation II: Stefan Döring, Extreme weather, drought & displacement
- Networking Discussion: Open mingle for researchers interested in collaboration
