AI unpacked: Leadership, organizations, and society in the age of AI

How will AI change the way we work, lead, make decisions, and interact with one another? The SSE Tech Initiative’s “AI unpacked” series was created to help students understand and navigate the growing role of artificial intelligence in business and society. Through talks, seminars, and workshops, the series explores how AI is affecting organizations, professions, industries, and society – and what this means for future leaders.

Artificial intelligence is no longer a niche technology topic. At rapid speed, it has changed how organizations make decisions, how professionals work, how industries compete, and how individuals interact with information and one another.

The purpose of the “AI unpacked” series is to help SSE students engage critically and constructively with these developments.

Rather than treating AI purely as a technical topic, the series explores questions such as:

  • How is AI transforming organizations, industries, and professions?
  • What opportunities and limitations do generative AI tools create?
  • How will AI affect expertise, leadership, and decision-making?
  • What ethical, legal, and societal challenges emerge as AI becomes more embedded in everyday life?
  • How can individuals and organizations use AI responsibly and effectively?

Topics range from generative AI and prompt engineering to questions of fairness, regulation, competitiveness, sustainability, human judgment, and the future role of professionals in an AI-driven world. Some sessions focus on practical applications and tools, while others explore broader ethical, societal, and organizational implications.

Learning outcomes

Through the series, students are encouraged to:

  • Develop a broader understanding of the opportunities and limitations of AI,
  • Critically evaluate how AI is reshaping organizations, industries, and professional roles,
  • Reflect on the ethical, societal, and strategic implications of AI adoption,
  • Explore practical ways of interacting with and applying AI tools,
  • Strengthen their ability to navigate an increasingly AI-enabled world in an informed, reflective, and responsible way.

The series is intentionally interdisciplinary and beginner-friendly. It is designed to complement SSE’s existing programs by creating a space for reflection, discussion, experimentation, and dialogue among students, researchers, and industry professionals.

The “AI unpacked” series is closely connected to SSE’s educational philosophy, FREE, particularly the reflective, empathetic, entrepreneurial, and responsible dimensions of leadership.
