Henrike Steimer

Meet Henrike Steimer – Senior Data Scientist - AI Products at Meta and MSc in Economics alum.

Describe your role and what it is that you do overall and on a day-to-day basis.

I am a Research Scientist at Meta Platforms, Inc. We are a Data Science team pursuing our mandate to secure advertiser value from newly developed products and features. To do this, we work with product teams during the different development phases of new products. We use A/B testing and causal inference methods to understand implications for the ecosystem and make recommendations for adjustments of products..

What interested you about the field/company/role you are currently in?

I am passionate about leveraging data science tools to inform high-impact decision-making combining economic intuition with machine learning and econometric methods. I also enjoy working in multi-disciplinary and data-driven environments to work on innovative new products.

Why did you choose to study your subject area at SSE?

I am very curious about economics which was also my major during my undergraduate degree and always enjoyed taking a more quantitative focus. SSE provides a great opportunity to dive deep into economics while at the same time keeping a close connection to business studies and corporate relationships.

How did your time/education at SSE help guide you to the career journey you have embarked on?

Economics provides a great foundation for the multi-disciplinary world of data science building powerful economic and business intuition while promoting great quantitative skills.

I also enjoyed the international environment and even benefited from the exchange program leading me to HEC Paris to study Finance.

What path did you take from graduation to where you are now? (A few brief bullet points, would be great)?

  • 2014-2018: PhD in Economics at LMU Munich

  • 2018-2020: Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford Graduate School of Business

  • 2020-2021: Postdoctoral Scholar at LMU Munich

  • 2021-2022: Senior Data Scientist at Quantum Black, AI by McKinsey

  • 2022 till now: Research Scientist at Meta Platforms, Inc.

Following your time studying and living in Stockholm, do you have any words of wisdom or advice you would like to share with our current students?

Take advantage of the great network and close ties of the school to the technology companies and the overall start-up ecosystem in the city! If you can, explore different areas like coding in different languages, taking classes in other master programs, connecting with different groups.
