Tuition fees and scholarships

Tuition fees (BSc, MSc & PhD)

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens
Citizens of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland are not required to pay tuition fees.

Ukrainian citizens
Citizens of Ukraine who get admitted to any of SSE's Master programs (intake 2024) are not required to pay tuition fees.

Non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens
Non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens are generally required to pay tuition fees.

  • BSc programs: SEK 120,000 per year if you are required to pay
  • MSc programs: SEK 180,000 per year if you are required to pay
  • PhD programs: free of charge

SSE generally follows the same regulations regarding tuition fees as all public universities in Sweden. Check if you are required to pay here. There are some exceptions to this general rule (see information below).

Payment of the fees

The fees at SSE are paid in installments (1 per semester) and are due before the semester starts (June 1, December 31, August 31, December 31, etc.).

In case you don't need to pay the tuition fee, you will be asked to provide a proof of your status (e.g. EU/EEA passport, decision from the Migration Board granting you the residence permit in Sweden). It is your status by the payment deadline that defines whether you are required to pay or not. E.g. if you are in the process of receiving a EU passport or Swedish residence permit and you get it before June 1, you are not required to pay. If you receive it after June 1, you are required to pay the fees for the first semester, but will be exempted from paying for the next one.

There are hundreds of scholarships for studying abroad, including general scholarships and more specialized ones aimed at particular courses. Some scholarships are offered by government agencies, some by individual universities, and others by external foundations. Have a look at the scholarship database to see all the scholarships offered in Sweden to study abroad! More scholarships can be found below.

Scholarships administrated by SSE (including scholarships with specific eligibility requirements):

Full and half tuition scholarships (BSc & MSc):

For non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens, SSE offers several half tuition fee waivers and a limited number of full tuition fee waivers. All scholarship applications are assessed by a selection committee, taking into consideration the relevance and the quality of the personal motivation, academic excellence, relevant extra-curricular activities, program cohort diversity and the distribution of scholarships across all programs.

How to apply:

  1. The application for a scholarship is submitted during the application process for the BSc or MSc program, via our online application portal (please see the tab called "Scholarships" in the program application).

  2. Write a motivational letter for the available funding, and if you would like, you can mention that you fulfil the requirements for a specific fund (see below). This will make the matching easier for us.

Please note that your application for the scholarships is not going to have an impact on your application for the program. Scholarships are distributed on a merit and need basis and we take into consideration the fair distribution across the programs.

GELS scholarship (BSc & MSc)

Each year the President of the Stockholm School of Economics personally hand-picks one or two outstanding students to realize a project of their own design abroad. The purpose of this is to equip these future leaders with the tools and experiences necessary to succeed, both in their studies at SSE as well as future careers.

Many previous GELS winners started out as management consultants and are now CEOs for large companies, entrepreneurs or leaders of large organizations. They work in countries ranging from Sweden and the US to Singapore and Vietnam, providing a global network. Their projects range from fast-food noodles to international aid coordination.

Coming up with a project of your own design and executing it in a foreign country will be both fun and challenging – while providing plenty of personal development. And by setting a clear goal for the impact you aim to achieve you get the chance to apply the theories you’ve learned at SSE in real life.
