SSE MBA Pedagogy
On this page, you can learn more about the pedagical approach used in the SSE MBA Executive Format.
Learning philosophy
The learning philosophy of the SSE MBA Executive Format is based on the educational mission of the Stockholm School of Economics. It aims to develop decision-makers who approach the world with curiosity and confidence, and who are open to the unknown.
The program uses a range of teaching methods adapted to different subjects and challenges. These methods are guided by SSE’s educational framework, summarized by the acronym FREE, which describes the key learning outcomes for participants.
Participants learn through a combination of research-based knowledge, practical application, and problem-driven learning.
Practical and applied learning – MBALive®
The program focuses on applying theoretical frameworks to real business situations.
Through the MBALive® pedagogy, participants work with real cases, live projects, and their own professional experiences. This approach connects theory with practice and helps participants apply what they learn directly in their work.
MBALive® develops an understanding of how organizations function in complex and changing environments. Participants work together with peers, faculty, and external partners to analyze real challenges and develop practical recommendations.
This approach is used throughout most modules and courses, allowing participants to apply their learning continuously during the program.
Reflective learning
Reflection is a central part of the program. Participants are given time and tools to reflect on their learning, experiences, and development.
This helps create deeper understanding and supports both individual and group learning.
Learning methodology
Before each campus week, participants prepare through readings, digital materials, and assignments.
Campus weeks focus on interactive learning, including case discussions, lectures, group work, guest speakers, and company visits.
Leadership development
Leadership development is integrated throughout the program, with a strong focus in the LeadershipLive program.
Participants develop their leadership skills through coaching, self-reflection, and practical exercises. The program supports personal and professional growth and helps participants lead change in their organizations.
LeadershipLive
LeadershipLive runs throughout the program and supports long-term leadership development.
Participants work with academic frameworks, coaching, and peer learning to build self-awareness, confidence, and leadership skills.
The program includes: - Individual coaching - Peer-to-peer coaching - Team development and collaboration - Self-assessment and reflection
Participants learn from faculty, guest speakers, and alumni, and apply their learning in real situations.
The program also supports the development of a personal leadership approach, helping participants define and strengthen their leadership style.
