Ruilin focuses on researching knowledge professionals' experience and management of time in hybrid work, along with related themes such as work-life boundaries, collaborations, the dynamics of autonomy and control. He employs a qualitative inductive approach in his studies.

Prior to his research work, Ruilin gained practical experience at numerous Chinese and American tech companies, specializing in cloud development and operations. He earned a master's degree in management and organization in Finland and a bachelor's degree in management information systems in the United States, with partial studies in China.
