Ruilin researches autonomy and control in evolving work contexts such as hybrid arrangements and the adoption of generative AI, with a particular focus on work–life boundaries. He takes a relational, qualitative approach.

Prior to his research work, Ruilin gained practical experience at numerous Chinese and American tech companies, specializing in cloud development and operations. He earned a master's degree in management and organization in Finland and a bachelor's degree in management information systems in the United States, with partial studies in China.
