Meet Estrid, one of SSE's new CIVICA Ambassadors

As a CIVICA Ambassador, Estrid Kaarme wants to increase engagement among students for current European civic issues. Read the interview below to find out more about CIVICA and Estrid's ambitions.

What motivated you to apply for the CIVICA ambassador role?

I think CIVICA is a great opportunity for international collaboration, and since that is one of my biggest interests, learning from others, across borders and cultures, I really wanted to be an ambassador and encourage people to do just that.

CIVICA brings together students from across Europe — what excites you about meeting your peers from other universities?

Again, seeking different perspectives and learning from our similarities and differences. Having an open channel of discussion will help tackle different issues and challenges that require different standpoints.

Was there a particular experience — at SSE, abroad, or elsewhere — that sparked your interest in cross-European collaboration?

I have lived in Canada as an exchange student before, and that was where my interest for international relations sparked. However, I am nowadays more interested in European relations as they impact our everyday lives to a high degree. I like the EU and the opportunities it brings, CIVICA being one of them.

What do you hope to achieve as a CIVICA ambassador?

I would like to increase visibility of CIVICA at SSE and get more student involved. Sometimes you see the CIVICA banners around school, but I feel like few students know what they are actually for, and what they work with. I would love to change this.

Is there a specific theme or project you’re excited to explore with other ambassadors?

I think AI and its impact on democracies is a particularly important matter right now. It's extremely relevant, and I would really like to explore it more.
