6 million SEK to research on artificial intelligence

Professor Per Andersson at the Stockholm School of Economics has been granted 6 million SEK in funding by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation for a three-year research project on AI. The project will create a platform for developing knowledge about key challenges in the implementation of new AI solutions.

”I am very delighted to receive this funding,” says Professor Per Andersson, with the SSE Institute for Research (SIR). “During the next three years this will allow me and the research group to create a platform for developing knowledge about key challenges in the implementation of AI as a new strategic imperative. The support of the foundation gives us the opportunity to provide a solid foundation for developing and disseminating new knowledge across industry boundaries.”

The grant is part of the national research program WASP-HS initiated by Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation and Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation in 2019. The program will investigate opportunities and challenges that arise as a result of the change in technology.

“The ongoing technology shift is not just about technology, algorithms, and data power, but it will affect us all and society as a whole. It is therefore important that the humanities and social science aspects are also explored,” says Peter Wallenberg Jr, Chair of Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation.

Challenging existing AI strategies

The research project – titled A study of AI as a new strategic imperative: challenging existing strategies, business models and organizational processes – consists of three parts: an AI Business Lab, an empirical, basic research part and a knowledge integration part. Up to four companies in different industries are initially connected to the knowledge platform and its business development.

The main challenges that the research project will investigate, Professor Andersson explains, include business development processes when translating AI-generated big data analyzes into value-creating services, the need for new organizational and business models when AI is implemented and strategic and structural issues, including distribution of responsibilities and control of AI-related activities.
