House of Innovation research article receives Best Paper Award

Congratulations to researchers Martin Sköld, Åke Freij, and Johan Frishammar whose research article has been awarded Best Paper 2020 from the European Management Review!

The research article, entitled “New Entrant or Incumbent Advantage in Light of Regulatory Change: A Multiple Case Study of the Swedish Life Insurance Industry,” focused on the area of strategy and innovation management. Specifically, it investigated a predominant view that when an industry is disrupted, the new companies have the advantage over old companies.

In a longitudinal multiple case study, using data over a 15-year period, this research challenged this view. By studying three established firms and three new firms in the life insurance industry, this research found that both kinds of firms can succeed if complementary assets are correctly managed. In particular, firms need to acquire and refine certain key assets needed for exploiting new business opportunities and, subsequently, need to enhance the value of their complementary assets.

Congratulations to researchers Martin Sköld, Åke Freij, and Johan Frishammar whose work generated a significant impact in the research community. Keep up the good work!
