Erik Berglof is the inaugural Chief Economist of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Prior to joining AIIB in September 2020, he was Director of the Institute of Global Affairs, London School of Economics, and Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, where he was part of creating and co-led the Vienna Initiative, a European crisis response credited with mitigating the impact of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. He is also the former director of the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) at the Stockholm School of Economics. |
He has served on several international commissions and is currently a Commissioner on the UNDN Commission on Urban SDG Finance. He is an expert in transition economics and institutional transformation through private sector development and has published extensively in top economic journals. He is a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington D.C., Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London, as well as a Fellow of the European Council of Foreign Relations in Berlin.

In December the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) unveiled its 2023 Asian Infrastructure Finance report, “Nature as Infrastructure” at COP28 in Dubai, where it facilitated a panel discussion of industry experts on the topic. Drawing on extensive data and case studies from all over the world, the “Nature as Infrastructure” report points to opportunities to maximize nature as our most critical infrastructure and outlines potential solutions toward a nature-positive future.
In this Misum Open Seminar, AIIB Chief Economist Erik Berglof will present on “Nature as Infrastructure” and the role of multilateral development banks in exploring new financing and lending instruments to catalyze a more nature-friendly development path and reverse crucial biodiversity loss.
