Incoming exchange students
The Stockholm School of Economics welcomes around 180 exchange students each year. The Global Initiatives Team within the Education Office coordinates the student exchange program and supports students and partner institutions before, during, and after the exchange period.
On this page, you will find useful information about studying at SSE and living in Stockholm. Please note that SSE does not accept free movers.
About the Stockholm School of Economics
The Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) is an internationally recognized business school in the Nordic and Baltic region. Since 1909, SSE has educated people for leading roles in business, government, civil society and the public sector.
SSE’s education is grounded in current research and strengthened by close collaboration with Swedish and international organizations. SSE is accredited by EQUIS, the European Quality Improvement System.

Nomination and application
SSE accepts nominations only through its official online form. Partner universities receive the nomination link when the nomination period opens. Students who have not been nominated through the form cannot be enrolled in the exchange program.
Nomination deadlines
April 1 for the fall semester and October 1 for the spring semester.
After the nomination period closes, nominated students are invited to complete an online registration form.
Students nominated for the spring semester will receive access to the registration form in October. Students nominated for the fall semester will receive access in April.
Student application and account
Once the registration form has been completed and approved, the student will be issued an acceptance letter. They will also receive further information about the housing application and SSE student account.
Prior to their arrival, a mandatory online meeting will be held for all incoming exchange students where they will receive more information about course registration and practical information for their stay at SSE.

Academic calendar
The academic year at SSE is divided into two semesters: a fall semester and a spring semester. Each semester is further divided into two teaching periods, with periods one and two in the fall semester and periods three and four in the spring semester.
While most exchange students attend SSE for a full semester, partner universities are welcome to nominate their students for only one teaching period or for the full academic year if preferred. This can be indicated in the nomination form.
Before the start of each semester, we welcome all exchange students to SSE with an Orientation Day to get acquainted with the university and to get to know other students and the SSE community.

Courses
Students may register for up to two courses per teaching period, or three courses if one of them is a language course. To take a third non-language course, students must obtain approval from their home university.
Check the course lists linked below for a list of courses open to exchange students. Bachelor’s students may in some cases enroll in Master’s-level courses, provided they meet the course prerequisites and have approval from their home university.
Students should check each course’s exam schedule and the language of instruction, as a select number of courses from the Bachelor’s program are taught in Sweden.

Teaching and assessment
The educational programs at SSE are based on research and stress a theoretical and analytical approach. Since the School’s foundation, Economics has occupied a stronger position in the curriculum than at most business schools.
The teaching methodology is a mixture of American and European teaching methods and theories. Some courses are characterized by more traditional teaching, with lectures, written course assignments and seminars.
In other courses the teaching is to a great extent based on cases; active participation in class is expected and contributes to the final grade. Many of the courses require substantial preparatory reading.
The contacts between students and faculty members are rather informal at SSE. Feel free to contact your professors if you have any questions regarding the courses you are taking.
As an exchange student you study under the same conditions as the Swedish students. You may find that the structure of the SSE exams differs from those at your home university and therefore it is advisable to review past papers before taking your first exam.
Academic information
English language requirements
Students must demonstrate English proficiency at CEFR level B2 or above. The home university is responsible for confirming that nominated students meet this requirement.
Course format
Courses are typically conducted on site and in person. Exchange students are expected to remain until the end of their scheduled examinations. No special arrangements for early exams can be made.
Workload
A full-semester workload is 30 ECTS credits, normally 15 ECTS credits or two courses per teaching period.
Transcripts
Transcripts are available approximately two months after the final examinations. Students are invited to download their transcript directly from the internal portal. An original copy can be sent by post upon request.
Practical matters
Housing
At SSE, we have a small housing office that offers rooms and apartments to some of our international students. There is no guarantee of housing, so we recommend that you also explore other accommodation options. You can find more information here.
Cost of living
The following is a feasible monthly budget:
- Housing: SEK 6,000 – 10,000
- Food: SEK 3,000
- Insurance: SEK 500
- Hobbies: SEK 2,000
- Local Transportation: SEK 650
Total: SEK 12,150 - 16,150
Exchange students have so far been exempt from the otherwise compulsory student association fees. Please note that you will need to pay for course literature, i.e. books, compendiums, etc.
Resident permit for studies
Depending on their citizenship and length of stay, students may need a residence permit to study in Sweden. Check the Swedish Migration Agency website for the requirements that apply to you.
Insurance
It is important that you purchase travel insurance covering your journey to Sweden and ensure that you have valid health insurance for the duration of your stay in Sweden.
Students from EU/EEA countries should bring a European Health Insurance Card from their home country or documentation confirming comprehensive private health insurance coverage.

Our Guidance and Wellbeing Office provides support to students with special needs, access to a certified counsellor, and assistance from the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager.

Would you like to learn Swedish?
Although all programs at SSE are taught entirely in English - and English is widely spoken throughout Sweden - many international students choose to learn some Swedish to feel more connected to everyday life in Stockholm and Swedish society.
The Swedish Institute offers a range of helpful resources, language tools, and study tips for students who would like to begin learning Swedish before arriving in Sweden or continue improving their skills during their studies.
SSE also offers Swedish language courses at different levels for students who would like to learn the language while studying at the School.
Even a basic understanding of Swedish can make it easier to navigate daily life, meet new people, and gain additional insights into Swedish culture and society.
