Agnes Nilsson

Meet Agnes Nilsson - Economic Policy Advisor at Socialdemokraterna and MSc in Business & Management alum.

1. Describe your role and what it is that you do overall and on a day-to-day basis.

I work as an Economic Policy Advisor at Socialdemokraterna, the largest political party in the Swedish parliament. My role includes policy development and the preparation of budget and tax-related positions. On a day-to-day basis, I analyse government proposals, coordinate with MPs and other stakeholders, draft speeches and op-eds, and support parliamentary work. It’s a highly stimulating role that combines economic expertise with political judgment, strategy and communication skills.

2. What interested you about the field / company / role you are currently in?

I have always wanted to make an impact on society and address social injustice. Politics offers a unique arena to turn those ambitions into real change. The constant flow of new challenges, the need to think strategically under pressure, and the opportunity to influence public debate are very motivating. Working at the heart of the political arena means no two days are alike, and the stakes are high.

3. Why did you choose to study your subject area at SSE?

To be the best, you have to learn from the best. SSE offers a world-class business education with a unique openness to public and societal issues. I wanted to build a solid analytical foundation while maintaining a broader perspective, something SSE enables through its interdisciplinary and international approach.

4. How did your time / education at SSE help guide you to the career journey you have embarked on?

My time at SSE provided me with both the hard and soft skills needed to thrive in policy environments. During my final year, I was a Wallenberg International Fellow, which gave me the opportunity to study at Georgetown University and intern in Washington, D.C. That experience sharpened my interest in the intersection of business and politics and helped me build a network that continues to be valuable. The support and inspiration I received from SSE faculty and peers have played a big part in my professional journey.

5. Following the time at SSE, do you have any words of wisdom or advice you would like to share with our current students?

Use your time at SSE to try new things, connect with people outside your immediate field, and reflect on the kind of impact you want to make. Remember that even though there can be a lot of pressure while studying, you will probably never be in a more forgiving space. Test, try, fail, and explore. And don't forget that everyone is on their own journey, so dare to follow your own interests and develop your own profile.

6. What are three words that sum up your time at SSE?

Challenging, formative, inspiring.
