Johan Orrenius: latest PhD graduate at the Department of Economics

Department of Economics is proud to present its latest PhD graduate: Johan Orrenius. He has successfully defended his thesis on June 10th, and we congratulate him on this momentous achievement. Congratulations, Johan!

Otto Toivanen, Professor at Aalto University, Department of Economics acted as Opponent.

Johan's Dissertation “Essays on Markets: Digital Attention, Market Definitions and Education"

This doctoral dissertation in Economics contains three self-sustained essays. “What is the value of attention? Supply and demand estimation of attention in a mobile app setting” studies individuals’ valuation of their attention by investigating how much people pay to avoid advertisements. Using a mobile game app, it establishes the value of attention to individuals to be of the same magnitude as other estimates of the value of time. The attention of individuals who have a higher valuation of their attention is worth more to advertisers on the attention market.
“Market Definitions in the Real-estate Agents Market: A Data-driven Approach Using Statistical Learning” introduces Spatial and Categorical Bayesian Clustering, a novel method to define geographic markets. Applying it to the Stockholm Real estate market, the authors improve the number of correct classifications compared to the standard method and show that the choice of method to define geographic market definition has an economic impact.
“The impact of remedial education on educational achievements” is a study of how remedial help in compulsory school impacts the performance of students. It shows how intense remedial help improves short-term performance and upper secondary school attendance.

Johan will join IFN, Stockholm as a Post-doctoral Researcher
