About the event
This workshop honors Giancarlo Spagnolo’s extensive contributions to economics and public policy. His research has advanced understanding in areas such as procurement design, competition and collusion, anti-corruption policy, contract enforcement, and incentives for whistleblowing.
By gathering colleagues and collaborators from across Europe and beyond, the event highlights the lasting impact of his work across several fields of economics and its relevance for both academic research and policy design.
In honor of Giancarlo Spagnolo
Giancarlo is Professor of Economics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and Senior Researcher at the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) at the Stockholm School of Economics, positions he has held since 2006. He is also a Research Fellow at CEPR in London and ENCORE in Amsterdam, a Scientific Advisor to LEAR in Rome, and a recurrent visitor at EIEF in Rome.
He holds an M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. from the Stockholm School of Economics. Previously, he was Assistant Professor at the University of Mannheim, Senior Economist in the Research Division of Sveriges Riksbank, and founder and head of the Research Unit at the Italian Public Procurement Agency, Consip SpA. He has also been a visiting scholar at Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley, and a visiting professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Giancarlo has published numerous highly cited articles in leading international academic journals. He is co-editor and a main contributor to Cambridge University Press’s Handbook of Procurement, which has also been translated into Russian. He is an internationally recognized authority on antitrust, public procurement, and anti-corruption issues, and has advised national and international institutions on these topics, including the World Bank, the European Parliament, the European Commission, and several antitrust and procurement authorities.
