Under- and post-lockdown in emerging nations

The tradeoffs between contagion management and economic activity is sharper in poor countries and emerging markets. "We cannot have the poor, the labourers and the migrants bear the brunt of the effort to contain the spread of the virus, nor do we want to weaken the foundations of the economy so much that we emerge from the pandemic onto an economic wasteland."

In two recent popular contributions, Kaushik Basu, C Marks Professor at Cornell University and former Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank, reflects about reasons for caution as countries emerge from strict lockdowns, but also for hope at the ingenious solutions that have been found around the world to protect citizens without shutting down the economy.
