EIJS Tokyo Academy Seminar, 29 January 2015

"IEA World Energy Outlook and Challenges to Japan" by Mr. Nobuo Tanaka, Global Associate for Energy Security and Sustainability Institute of Energy Economics, Japan 

Mr. Tanaka will talk outlook for the Japan's energy policy overviewing the World Energy Outlook 2014 (WEO-2014) which was released on 12 November, 2014 in London. The World Energy Outlook is recognized as the most authoritative source of strategic analysis of global energy markets. The  WEO-2014 presents up to date projections of energy trends toward 2040. Data and information in the outlook are used as input to the development of government policies and business strategies and raises public awareness of the key energy and environmental challenges the world is facing. 
In the presentation, we would also like to hear Mr. Tanaka’s view on the recent falling oil prices and its economic and political impact in Japan and around the world.

Mr. Nobuo Tanaka is the Global Associate for Energy Security and Sustainability at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan since 2011. He is also Professor of University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Public Policy, since 2013. He has served as Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) from 2007 to 2011. During the IEA appointment, he was responsible for pioneering the concept of “comprehensive energy security” while also expanding the Agency’s focus on climate change, renewable energy and the transition to a low-carbon energy economy. Mr. Tanaka led IEA work on fossil fuel subsidy reform, energy efficiency policy recommendations, low-carbon energy technology roadmaps, gas and electricity security, energy poverty and carbon capture and storage. He also played a crucial role in the strengthening of ties with major IEA non-member energy players, including China, India, Russia, Brazil, Chile, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa, and in IEA relations with business and started the IEA Energy Business Council.
