Martina Björkman Nyqvist appointed to Sida’s board

The Swedish government has appointed Martina Björkman Nyqvist, professor of economics at the Stockholm School of Economics and Executive Director of Misum, as a new member of the board of Sida. She brings extensive expertise in impact evaluation of development aid – to help ensure that aid funding is used where it can make the greatest difference.

The government has tasked Sida with evaluating its initiatives using scientific methods, a decision grounded on the guidance provided by Martina Björkman Nyqvist, Professor of Economics and Director of Misum at the Stockholm School of Economics, on evidence-based approaches during spring 2025.

We are glad to announce that our Misum Affiliate Laurence Romani, together with professor Andrea Voyer and Dr. Paolo Velásquez have secured a 6 million SEK in funding from Riksbankens Jubileumfond for their new research project on “Solving the integration challenge of high-skilled migrants: the central role of merits”.

We are glad to announce that Misum Platform Director Mattia Bianchi, Affiliate Suvi Nenonen, and Kathleen Burke (formerly a postdoc at SSE) have secured 7 million SEK in funding from Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation for their 4-year research project: "Making Markets for Forest Ecosystem Services: Investigating Novel Technologies and Business Models."

In this latest Misum Academic Insight, Misum affiliates Maria Perrotta Berlin, Anders Olofsgård, and co-author Evelina Bonnier analyze the impacts of foreign aid on female empowerment, drawing on community-level data from Malawi. The study examines the outcomes of general and gender-targeted aid on gender norms and empowerment in rural settings.
