The Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets (Misum) at the Stockholm School of Economics is receiving a total of SEK 80 million in new funding for research on and education in sustainability. The Swedish government has appointed Martina Björkman Nyqvist, professor of economics at the Stockholm School of Economics and Executive Director of Misum, as a new member of the board of Sida. She brings extensive expertise in impact evaluation of development aid – to help ensure that aid funding is used where it can make the greatest difference.

The government has tasked Sida with evaluating its initiatives using scientific methods, a decision grounded on the guidance provided by Martina Björkman Nyqvist, Professor of Economics and Director of Misum at the Stockholm School of Economics, on evidence-based approaches during spring 2025.

Carl Folke, professor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, director of the Beijer Institute, founder of the Stockholm Resilience Centre and Misum Board Member was selected to speak on Swedish Radio program Sommar i P1.

In this latest Misum Academic Insight, Misum affiliates Maria Perrotta Berlin, Anders Olofsgård, and co-author Evelina Bonnier analyze the impacts of foreign aid on female empowerment, drawing on community-level data from Malawi. The study examines the outcomes of general and gender-targeted aid on gender norms and empowerment in rural settings.
