About us

The House of Sustainable Society is a multidisciplinary research house at the Stockholm School of Economics. We collaborate with partners in academia, business, and policy to generate research-based and practical solutions for sustainable development.

What we do

At the House of Sustainable Society (HoSS), we bring together researchers across disciplines to study how environmental challenges, social issues, and economic development interact. Our work focuses on generating rigorous research that informs decision-making and long-term societal change. By combining perspectives, we aim to better understand complex sustainability challenges that cannot be solved in isolation.

A core part of our mission is to collaborate with businesses, industry leaders, policymakers, and civil society to generate impactful research for sustainable solutions. In 2026 we are developing the HoSS Impact Lab to accelerate this work, more on that below.

In addition to research, we actively share our findings and host activities ranging from research seminars to larger events such as the annual Forum, creating spaces for dialogue between research and practice.

Our affiliated researchers also contribute to teaching at the Stockholm School of Economics and beyond, integrating sustainability perspectives into education and equipping students with tools to address complex societal challenges.

Research platforms

Our research is organized around four platforms:

Together, these platforms examine how policies, capital markets, governance systems, and business practices shape sustainable development. Affiliated researchers across the different platforms are published in peer-reviewed academic journals and produce policy briefs and reports to support evidence-based decision-making.

The Impact Lab

In 2026 we are introducing the HoSS Impact Lab: a hub for collaboration between House of Sustainable Society-affiliated researchers and partners in business, government, and civil society. It will turn important societal challenges into research that is both academically rigorous and relevant in practice. By bringing researchers and stakeholders together from the start, the Lab will create opportunities to test ideas, generate new knowledge, and develop solutions with real-world impact.

The Lab will build on our many past and present collaborations with practitioners, policymakers, and civil society. For example, we have partnered with:

  • Doconomy and Flowe to understand how carbon footprint information influences consumer behavior.
  • Morningstar Sustainalytics to explore what makes shareholder engagement effective.
  • Pratham Education Foundation to evaluate programs that improve learning outcomes.
  • Scania to study their transition to a solution-based business model, in line with the 1,5 degree target of the Paris Agreement.

The HoSS Impact Lab will expand on partnerships like these, connect new organizations with researchers, and support projects from idea development and data collection to implementation and impact.

Funding

The House of Sustainable Society is supported through a shared funding model by Mistra (the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research) and the Kamprad Family Foundation. Together, they contribute SEK 80 million over five years to strengthen sustainability research and impact at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE). This builds on Mistra’s earlier investment of SEK 120 million between 2015 and 2025 to establish a sustainability center at SSE. HoSS also hosts projects funded by Vinnova, the Swedish Research Council, and Formas, among others.

From Misum to HoSS

In 2026, the Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets (Misum) became the House of Sustainable Society. HoSS builds on Misum’s foundation while expanding its scope and collaborations. With continued support from Mistra and new funding from the Kamprad Family Foundation, HoSS establishes a long-term structure for sustainability research at SSE.

Information on past programs and projects is available in our annual reports.
