Decoding Financial Risk: Insights from Science

Paolo Sodini

Professor, Department of Finance, SSE Director of MiDa – the Institute for Micro Data at SSE & SHoF

Paolo's research focuses on Household Finance, the field of Financial Economics that studies how households use financial markets to achieve their goals. He has studied the welfare consequences of household financial mistakes, such as portfolio diversification and rebalancing, and the importance of sophistication in limiting financial losses. He has also worked on the determinants of welfare inequality, in particular on the role of savings, financial risk-taking and returns to wealth. His latest research focuses on real estate markets and explores the impact of homeownership on household economic behaviour and gender differences in the housing market.

Annika Sundén

SSE Alum and Economist

Annika Sundén is a freelance Economist. Until January 2022, she was the Head of Labor Market Analysis at the Swedish Public Employment service. Previously, Ms. Sundén served as the Chief Economist at Sida and deputy director-general of the Swedish Pensions Agency. She has also held research or management positions with the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, and the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC. Ms. Sundén is involved in various professional activities, including as a member of the Swedish Fiscal Policy Council and of the Delegation for Migration Studies. Ms. Sundén earned her B.S. from the Stockholm School of Economics and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in economics from Cornell University.

Kimberly Bauner

Group Treasurer at SEB

Kimberly Bauner is Group Treasurer of SEB Group since 2023. Kimberly has extensive experience in the global capital markets and managing market risks in the banking book. Kimberly has worked in bank Treasury teams for nearly 20 years in the US, UK, and across the Nordics, having most recently been Group Treasurer of Danske Bank. Kimberly holds a Master in Business Administration from INSEAD in France, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University.

Pontus von Essen

SSE Alum, Director and Relationship Manager for Family Offices and Foundation at Deutsche Bank

Based in Stockholm, Pontus von Essen is a Director and Relationship Manager for Family Offices and Foundation at Deutsche Bank. He has more than fifteen years of experience in asset management and capital markets. Before joining Deutsche Bank, Pontus von Essen was the Head of Strategy at AP7, the seventh Swedish national pension fund (AUM: SEK1200bn). At AP7, he previously served as Head of Fixed Income, FX and Alpha, managing all Fixed Income and Hedge Fund strategies.

Prior to that, he spent more than six years at Ericsson Pension where he served as Portfolio Manager, Head of Equities and lastly as Deputy Chief Investment Officer. Pontus von Essen started his career at Swedish bank SEB in proprietary trading and institutional sales. He holds a Master of Science in Finance with a major in Investments from the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE).
